I had the occasion to brunch with some girlfriends from Louisville and we chose Shelbyville as the perfect midway point.
We opted for the quaint and historic site of the Bell House Restaurant. The Bell House is named for the large iron bell which resides in the front yard. It is rung twice daily at 11 AM and 5 PM to announce that delicious meals are ready to be served. The exterior is a lovely home that compliments the downtown neighborhood with handsome, white trim and well appointed features. The interior is decorated in warm colors with an ambiance that is both cozy and inviting.
Expertly prepared by Chef Brent Evans, the menu consists of brunch favorites such as his distinctive breakfast casserole, the traditional and savory Kentucky Hot Brown and a delectable Eggs Benedict.
After a delightful meal we were off on foot to explore the magic of downtown Shelbyville. A little known fact is that this city is the American Saddlebred Capital of the World and you will discover images of the iconic horse all around town.
The Shelbyville Visitor Center boasts a not-so-subtle saddlebred horse in front of their establishment. The center’s folks are amicable and eager to impart the area’s history and the inside scoop on the best places to visit.
We perused a number of pleasant, little shops and then stepped into a wonderful, new establishment known as Bourbon Kitchen 524. The decor is rustic and amusing with beautiful barnwood walls, interesting lighting and a colorful, chalkboard wall covered with information about their eats and drinks. For an added point of interest, visit the back for an enchanting display of CSA… in this case, “Customer Supported Art”! It is designed with the captivating air of a leisurely stroll through a nostalgic, old town where talented artists display their inspired creations.
Venturing on we came across the Shoppes at Blue Gables. Here you’ll find an interesting grouping of eleven suites, nestled together. These mini-establishments were formerly motel rooms. Built circa 1939, they have been infused with new life as fanciful, local shops! It’s a real treat to drop in and enjoy the regional works of art, home decor, pottery, stationery, wall art and much more.
Visitors will find a plethora of things to do and see in and around Shelbyville including golfing, community theatre, riding trails, shopping, distilleries and wineries!
