Derby Floral Centerpiece

Spring has arrived with Derby Day right around the corner on the first Saturday in May! Whether you plan your party indoors or out, formal or casual, verdant bouquets of flowers are always a fresh and fun way to add splashes of color. Enjoy your time making this derby floral centerpiece.

Derby-red roses are the perfect centerpiece for this occasion, representing the mantel of crimson blooms that drapes the winning thoroughbred. I opted for complimentary greenery and to change things up a bit, chose some aromatic eucalyptus. Brightly hued, spring flowers or even succulents are lovely selections, as your theme dictates.

The Mint Julep is the official drink of the Kentucky Derby and the silver, julep cup makes a fitting vessel. You can use any number of containers including vases, Ball jars, derby or rocks glasses.

One thing to keep in mind for your derby floral centerpiece is the location. If you are hosting a sit-down, dinner party, design a centerpiece that allows a view of all the guests at the table. On the other hand, if your floral focal point will set against a wall or in the center of a food table, a larger arrangement will work nicely.

Begin by holding the vase up to your flowers to determine a cut point. Slice them a little longer than needed. As the saying goes: Measure twice and cut once!

Plan on three to five buds per container, depending on the size. Pull the leaves off the bottom of the stems, as they will spoil the water if left submerged. You can still use them to accent and fill in your piece.

I use three julep cups with eucalyptus to create a lower, elongated arrangement. You can separate your individual pieces to distribute in different locations. For example, place one in the powder room next to a nicely scented candle. A second might accent your drink bar with another decorating a table of hors d’oeuvres.
